School Certificate
A qualification awarded to students who satisfactorily complete the Board of Studies requirements in a range of core subjects and attend school until the final day of Year 10.
School to Work Program
A government program to develop partnerships between schools and industry, business and the Vocational Education and Training sector.
School to work transition
Moving from school to the workforce or to further study.
School-industry program
A program for Year 11 and 12 students which combines school learning with workplace learning.
Science
The Key Learning Area in secondary schooling that contains such subjects as biology, chemistry and physics.
Science and Technology
The Key Learning Area in primary schooling where students learn about natural and built environments.
Secondary Numeracy Assessment Program (SNAP)
A test of the numeracy achievements of Year 7 students.
Secondary
The years of schooling from Year 7 to Year 12.
Secondary schools
Schools for students from Years 7 to 12. Commonly called high schools, they can be co-educational or single-sex.
Selective high school
Schools for high achieving, academically talented students.
Selective High Schools Test
A test offered to students in Year 6 to wanting to attend a selective high school.
Self-assessment
A process in which learners or organisations assess their own performance.
Self-paced learning
Learning at a student's own pace.
Senior college
A senior college is generally a school for students in Years 11 and 12 and in some cases includes Year 10 students.

Stages of schooling
The curriculum in NSW is organised into six stages. Each Stage is linked to the Years of schooling as follows:
- Early stage 1 - Kindergarten
- Stage 1 - Years 1 and 2
- Stage 2 - Years 3 and 4
- Stage 3 - Years 5 and 6
- Stage 4 - Years 7 and 8
- Stage 5 - Years 9 and 10
- Stage 6 - Years 11 and 12.
Standard
A description of what students are expected to know and to be able to do.
Standards-referenced assessment
A student's progress is measured against syllabus and performance standards rather than against the progress of other students.
Statement of attainment
A certificate issued to a student for partial completion of a qualification. Achievements recognised by statements of attainment can accumulate towards a qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework.
Structured workplace learning (also called workplace learning and work placement)
The on-the-job part of a VET in Schools program. The student is not paid by the employer.
Student welfare
School policies for a safe, caring school environment in which students are supported as they learn. It includes everything the school community does to meet the personal, social and learning needs of students.
Study techniques
Skills which help students revise and recall what was learnt. These include time management, study methods, effective reading strategies, examination techniques, report writing and note taking.
Subject
A branch of knowledge studied through specific courses.
Syllabus
The description of what students are expected to learn in a course of study or Key Learning Area. It includes aims, objectives, outcomes, content and assessment requirements.
