Help with downloading

There are several different types of resources that can be downloaded. 

• Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other text documents need to be downloaded and opened with the appropriate application.
  
  
• Multimedia files containing multiple files and applications are downloaded as an archive (zip) file and uncompressed See: How do I unzip a file?
  
• Interactive whiteboard resource such as flipcharts and notebook files need to be installed in libraries and opened directly by the application they belong to. See: *Interactive whiteboards for more information. 
  
  
• Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files will open in a new browser window if a PDF plugin is installed. Otherwise PDF files are saved to your download location.
  
  
• Video and audio files are usually automatically downloaded and played within a browser window. Otherwise they are saved to your preferred location and can be opened with the appropriate media player. See: How do I play media files?
  
  
• Image files such as JPEG and GIF files.
  
   
• Flash animation files are usually downloaded as part of a multimedia resource package along with the HTML file to view in a browser window. See: How do I use Flash objects?
  
   

 Some resources are only available for use online. These include:

• Web sites published by DET and external content providers. These sites can be bookmarked or a web page can be saved on your computer by using Save as... or Save Page as... from the File or Page menu.
• Web applications that are connected to remote databases or dynamic data sources.
• Resources that use streaming media services to present video and audio content.
