Accessing information

Most people use a search for information online by typing a few words into the query box of a well known search engine and then scrolling through whatever comes up. Choose the best Search for your information need provides a range of search options, websites, databases and portals for specific types of information requirements. Four Nets for better searching explains four easy web searching techniques that give better results.

The State Library of NSW offers students information from a variety of sources including Electronic resources, and an information request service called Ask a librarian. Students can apply to access State Libary databases from home.

Evaluating information

It is important that students are able to assess the reliability and authority of web sites. The tutorial Evaluating websites provides key ideas in assessing the information source. QUICK: quality information checklist is a website more suitable for primary students, offering eight ways of checking information on web sites.

Using information

Organising and using the information found online can be improved through the use of templates or scaffolds. This collection of templates from Global Education is designed to help students sort, organise, present and make sense of information in a variety of forms.

Note the school library is a gateway to the information environment and the teacher librarian is an information specialist supporting information literacy skills development in the school. Remember always contact the school and arrange to talk with your child's teacher(s), if you have any questions about your child's learning.
